Dakota

On Monday morning we took Dakota (our 4 1/2 year old pup) to the vet for what we thought was a sprained or broken ankle, or possible torn tendon. He ran with me about 5 miles the week before and did fine except for the exhaustion and sore hips he usually exhibits. On Saturday afternoon he started limping and Tob stayed home from work with him on Sunday because he was wouldn't put any pressure on that back left leg and when I got home from La Grande that night I could see some swelling so we took him in first thing Monday morning. We found out that he has Osteosarcoma(Bone cancer) and has about 2-3 weeks to live. He is such a HUGE part of our family so we are struggling with this right now. We have looked into other options but they only seem to be a temporary or painful fix so we have decided to keep him on pain meds until we have to let him go. Anyway haven't felt like blogging and probably won't for a little while. I told the kids yesterday which was hard but I feel like it's better to tell them sooner then later so they can give him lots of love and attention. The kids started soccer this last week and when they start playing games I will get some pictures. We were luck they let lex play, she is doing great (even though all the kids are older) and loving it.

Oh Dawn, I am so sorry! That news brought tears to my eyes--he is such a great dog! When we were there I just wanted to take him home with us. He's so mellow and sweet and all the things one would want in a dog. I have nothing to offer to help your pain because nothing can help. I'm so glad you've had 4+ years with him. Give him lots of love and hugs from me too. Take care and love ya!

I'm sorry Dawn.. I remember when we almost lost Dexter when he got hit by a car and it was VERY upsetting (and I didn't even like Dex, he was pretty mean!) I can only imagine how upsetting it is to hear your Dog has cancer... sad sad sad.

Thanks for your thoughts guys! He is doing fairly well with the pain medication although he hasn't been able to walk of course on that back leg for a week now and it just continues to swell. He pretty much just sits in the back yard and catches flies as they land on him.
Your right Sarah Dex is mean but still cute with all the mischief he gets into.

Thanks Rachel and to all those who called me as well. It is so true about becoming "attached". I became so attached to him. He was originally "Toby's" dog for the first 2 years when he was so naughty and since tob was gone so much during the summers we bonded and he does almost everything with me. Day by day with the pain medication he is improving right now. I know it is only temporary but I think it will probably take longer then the 2-3 weeks the vet told us. He's one tough, whiney, spoiled pup.
